Choosing the Right Shipping Method
Selecting the optimal shipping method depends on your priorities: speed, cost, or reliability. Budget shoppers should use ePacket or China Post for items under $30 where delivery speed is not critical. Standard shoppers prefer EMS for its balance of cost and reliability. Urgent or high-value orders warrant DHL or FedEx Express.
Consider your location when choosing. EMS performs well to North America, Europe, and Australia. SF Express offers competitive rates to Asian destinations. DHL and FedEx have the broadest global network but come at premium prices.
Package Consolidation Strategy
The most effective cost-saving strategy is consolidation. Instead of shipping five separate items individually, combine them into one parcel. Most carriers charge per 500g weight bracket, so combining items lets you fill each bracket more efficiently.
A typical consolidated order of 5 items (3kg total) might cost $45 to ship. The same items shipped individually could cost $80+. The savings increase with more items, making consolidation essential for wardrobe-building orders.
Customs and Declared Values
Customs declarations affect both delivery speed and potential duties. Most sellers and agents will ask you to specify a declared value for the package. This is the amount customs sees as the package value.
Each country has a duty-free threshold: USA ($800), Canada ($20 CAD for gifts, $0 for commercial), UK (£135), EU countries (€150 for many, but varies). Declaring under these thresholds avoids duties but risks scrutiny if the value seems unrealistically low for the package contents.
For safety, we recommend declaring 60-70% of actual value for most countries. This provides reasonable customs clearance speed while minimizing duty risk. Our shipping dashboard has country-specific recommendations.
